The book In Space 2000: Generation 1989-2000 maps one of the possible perspectives on the very varied world of contemporary Czech artists working within a space- whether it be through sculpture, objects or installation. The road away from the traditional understanding of sculpture to today has gone through a stormy evolution in the past 100 years. The result is a contemporary state wherein sculpture in the classical sense can barely be spoken of. In objects and sculpture today, a variety of media and technology are used, ranging from found objects to the most recent technological discoveries through objects purchased in supermarkets and trash. It would appear that the attack on the traditional understanding of sculpture has come to a climax in the past twenty years.
In the book’s introduction, the theses that have played and continue to play a role in the birth of the state of the art forms of contemporary “sculpture” are summarized. What follows is an overview of forty-one Czech artists engaged in three-dimensional creation who came to the field of fine arts after 1989. The book is intended not only for the insider, but also for the general public.
Petr Písařík: Interview- extract from book
How do you perceive the world around you? Does it influence your work?
I try to be aware of the world around me for sure, one hundred percent. I like studying the world. Reality is how subjects and relationships with their inexhaustible range of possibilities appear to us. Observing everything around you is how you get to know yourself. Getting to know yourself is how I’m able to identify today’s world. I hope...The outer world filtered through the inner one formulates my statement.
