CATALOGUE / DEBATES WITH GEOMETRY / MUSEUM OF CZECH LITERATURE

This representative catalogue covers the exhibition Kolíbal, Diviš, Písařík, Štědrý –Debates with Geometry which took place at the Star Villa.

The catalogue details a comparison of the artistic expression of four contemporary artistic personalities confronted with a Renaissance architectural monument. Kolíbal’s work, which created a new canon in the context of Czech fine art due to its uniqueness and contains the basic building blocks of geometric shapes, is presented within this context. The counterpoint for Kolíbal’s classic, disciplined expression is the color and abstractness of “hand drawn geometry” in Diviš’s energetic compositions and his free references to architectural elements. Petr Písařík is the author of an undisciplined abstraction often composed of commonly used objects. The artist makes use of the aesthetic canons of the modernist tradition in new variants and forms of artistic expression. Štědrý is the youngest of the featured artists. In his work he confronts tried and tested possibilities of transforming geometric shapes and forms to give them new meanings.

The catalogue includes the curatorial texts of Zdeňek Freisleben, those of the mathematician Jaroslav Nešetřil, philosopher and sociologist Jiří Přibán and historian of art and architecture Ivan Prokop Muchka.
